Road to success in rap

Christian rappers starter kit

This post is the first of a series of posts that will guide every rapper on his or her own journey to a successful and fulfilling career. Every generation has different ideals and ideologies. This generation is different from any before it, technology has gone far beyond what most thought possible. Media has begun to take a more active part in condition who we are as a people. For generations, Hip Hop has been blamed for the rise of crime in America. More and more claims rise daily about Hip Hop, as many believe that it is infested by the illuminati, which many artists are said to be a part of, but that is neither here nor there. We will not get into that, no, not in this article. In all this dirt that has been associated with Hip Hop, a controversial diamond continues to shine a glim of hope. That diamond has come to be know as Christian Rap/ Holy Hip Hop, well it may be known to you by many other names, but these two are the  most common. In recent years this genre has made some insane strides, from being marginalised and at times even rejected by the church, to being accepted by most as a great tool for ministry. Hip Hop really commands a great audience, and has been harnessed by the enemy to draw our youth into the wrong paths. I for one was such a youth. I wanted to live up to most of the things that these rapper talk about in their music. In some respects I did, but ironically it was Hip Hop in the Christian form that God used to minister to me. This post is not about my story, so let’s move on. Many youths have a desire to be rappers, which is most cases is great. However as leaders we neglect to equip these individuals to fully function in this area. In this post I will attempt to do so. I will use things I have gathered over time with experience in my own life, working with other artists, interviewing artists, observations, biblical knowledge and more. I’ll try and be as brief and to the point as possible. This is a Christian rappers starter kit, however it will benefit all rappers. This will help you:

1 in a million

Personally I know hundreds of people who rap, and a few who I’d actually call rappers. Well as a person who raps, what you need to understand is that there are millions of people in the same spot that you are in. They all want the same success that you’d also like to see. You then need to ask yourself, what is it that will make you stand out among all those others? I know many very talented rappers who have not progressed beyond their own clique while other whack rappers have gone global. Their only difference was that ability to stand out in the crowd. One could be outstanding, but the other who stands out is the one who makes greater strides. If one can do both, the better. Take note of this. When Joseph was in prison and the Pharaoh needed his gift, there were many others in his courts that could do similar things but Joseph was called in because he was not only OUTSTANDING but his gift STOOD-OUT among the others!

write your vision down clearly

Define your brand

About a year ago, I met a very passionate rapper through social media. We got talking and I appreciated his faith and that he was using rap to express it. After a while I thought I’d use my resources and knowledge to help promote his music. I then asked him a simple question to guide me in how to assist him, “What is your vision for your music?” when he couldn’t answer that I pulled out. Proverbs 29:18 teaches that in the absence of a vision people perish. So I’ll pose the same question to you “What is your vision for your music?” Your vision should not only be something you have just conceptualised in your head. Write your vision down, take your art very serious. People will only take your art as serious as you take it. Habakkuk 2:2 says

Then the Lord answered me and said:

“Write the vision
And make it plain on tablets,
That he may run who reads it.
For the vision is yet for an appointed time;
But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie.
Though it tarries, wait for it;
Because it will surely come,
It will not tarry.

Your vision should not only be written but also clearly written. I guess this is where that Goal need to be Simple .Manageable .Achievable .Realistic . Time-bound. comes from. I beg to differ with the SMART thing though. Simple is fine, Manageable definitely, achievable is very subjective…you can achieve whatever you are willing to put work into. Realistic is also crippling, it has never been the realistic goals that have impacted the world. The Wright brothers at their time were not realistic in thinking that they could fly!! Yes time-bound is fair enough.

That’s it for the first part, the next will deal with Investing in your art, surrounding yourself with haters and presenting a professional front! Drop you comments on social media or below.
